Investment builds on 15+ year presence delivering new jobs, energy solutions, community impact, and economic growth Google’s single biggest investment in Europe will deliver AI infrastructure to Finland Google has announced plans to invest at least €13 billion in digital infrastructure in Finland over the next two years, deepening its long-term commitment to the country and to Europe. The deal will include data center and other supporting infrastructure investments and partnerships at acquired sites in Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos and Vaala. In addition, Google is supporting clean energy projects, and dedicated nature and community funds to support local biodiversity, education, research, and workforce development. This is Google’s largest single investment in Europe and is seen as a testament to Finland’s leadership in responsibly building AI infrastructure — demonstrating what is possible through strong partnerships to create long-term community value and world-class environmental sustainability. A model for responsible data center development The announcement builds on Google’s presence of more than 15 years in Finland. Since buying a former paper mill in 2009 and converting it into a modern data center in Hamina, Google has supported more than 40 social and community organizations while pioneering environmental initiatives such as a seawater-based cooling system and offsite heat recovery distribution to local homes and businesses. The Hamina data center currently supports a variety of jobs, and Google’s investments have fueled job creation and economic growth across many adjacent local industries, including wholesale and retail, professional and administrative services, and manufacturing. Enabling economic opportunity and research and development in Finland Google's €13 billion infrastructure investment is expected to contribute an annual average of €3.6 billion to Finland's GDP and support more than 37,000 jobs nationwide. The new digital infrastructure will serve as building blocks for Finnish and broader European digital readiness, innovation, and AI development, and will power Google’s popular services — such as Gemini, Search, Maps, and YouTube — that directly support European people and businesses every day. Petteri Orpo, Prime Minister of Finland, said : “ Finland is an attractive destination for investments, and attracting further investment remains a top priority. “Google’s decision is a clear testament to our strengths. The value of the data economy extends far beyond direct investment into spurring innovation, research, and development. Deepening our collaboration with Google will deliver lasting benefits for both parties.” Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google, said: “This investment underscores Google’s commitment to grow our presence responsibly, pairing the expansion of our technical infrastructure with new energy capacity, grid enhancements, and energy affordability initiatives. “At the community-level, Google is proud to support programs focused on advancing workforce development, education, and research – helping to unlock long-term economic opportunity both in Finland and across the broader European economy.” Meanwhile, Lassi Noponen, Director General of Business Finland, said: “ Finland wants to be a partner to the world’s leading technology companies. Google’s investments are a strong sign of confidence in Finland and strengthen the infrastructure on which the digital economy and artificial intelligence are built. “What is important for us is that these investments also generate new expertise, business activities and value creation in Finland.”
